Memoirs - 1965 to 1971 Batch - Dr.Kulam
Dr.Kulam (1965 to 1971 Batch) writes in

Hi Nagarajan,

Warm wishes my buddy and my roommate, how are you? Thank you for acknowledging of my memoirs of moon landing. Up to this moment I still see your face vividly when we all jumped with joy on that day. Welcome to these pages my friend, here comes more of our recollections, correct me if my memory is fading

Scooters & Mosquitoes:

Our lonely hostel buildings were built over the uninhabited dry land and predictably mosquitoes swamped our rooms especially during night hours, you could even notice their belly ballooned with our bright red blood. It was next to impossible to sleep without a net, now add to the bicycle, everyone had to have a mosquito net as well. My roommate Pillai had spent all his reading, until his Final MBBS, lying down within his mosquito net castle armed with a small fan, a reading light along with his books. I made fun of his habit but his reply always was “why spent energy sitting when you can read lying?”

We played volley ball in the middle court and ping ponged in the reading room. I followed Vietnam War, Viet congs, Naxalites and Nap bombs in the papers in the same reading room all thru my hostel years. Every one instantly morphed into movie play back singers as soon as they stepped under the shower; TM Sunderajan, AM Raja and Seerkali Govindarajan all come alive at very high decibels. Lambretta, Bajaj and prestigious Vespa scooters were parked side by side next to our tiny bicycles at the hostel front lobby and you could even notice a license plate with fancy number “007”, a James Bond logo. Those rich boys used our mess boys to wash their vanity vehicles nevertheless paid them well as well, I guess.

Beatles and the Bus

Initially a private contractor ran our cafeteria but in later years we organized our own mess in the hostel donating 100 rupees each as our down payment, when an average movie ticket was only 2 rupees then. In Sundays we enjoyed briyani along with a cigarette and beta at the end, some of us even swapped our hostel lunch with the vegetarian Tiffin box of day-scholar classmates, thus few non-smokers attempted inhaling smoke for the first time and few vegetarian friends tasted ” chicken or mutton”, of course without their parent’s knowledge, all at our men’s hostel.

We conducted even strikes, around 100 of us traveled to Madras, demanded our then female health minister a college bus with TVMC logo, initially we failed to persuade her but finally sent our college bus years later. We routinely danced at the hostel front, promoted “Family Planning” thru a play called Triangle, a logo of Niriodh condom, at the hospital grounds…boy what a hit it was? The whole nursing staff booed and laughed when we entered the hospital following day thus we became instant celebrities for one day. We celebrated arts and sports days at the hostel; we used college elections to get connected with our fellow girl students.

Among us were fans of MGR supported DMK and Shivagi supported Congress; Jayalalitha was cute and slim, unlike now ... Latha and Laximi were just blossoming out. “Chemmeen”, a Malayalam picture bagged the prestigious presidential award, Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna were ever popular in the north and Beatles were breaking records everywhere in the West.

As a TVMCiate myself I am offering a discount for TVMCiates if you are interested. The following files are attached for your asisstance. Please contact me for further details.

RESIDENTIAL PLOTS IN MADURAI
WITH VALUE FOR MONEY
SUPERB LOCALITY
FEW PLOTS AVAILABLE
BOOK IT NOW
Dear Customer,

This is a twenty five acre piecedeveloped residential land laid out in to housing plots each of one ground [5.5 cents ] and two grounds [ 11 cents ]. The land is situated on the State Highways No 33 [Madurai – Sivagangai ] Main road, Veerapanchan, Madurai – 20. The proposed Madurai – Rameswaram four way Track is going to be this road. It is about 800 yards from the Lakshmi [TVS] School, 600 yards from Aravind Eye Research Centre and 50 yards before Rajas College of Engineering and Technology. The new IT Park in Illanthakulam - Pandikoil is just 3 kilometres from the land. The land doesn’t have noise or industrial / motor pollution. It is very ideal for a quite residential locality. Water resource is plenty and the soil is very fertile. It is about four and a half kilometres from the most popular Anna Nagar of Madurai. It takes less than ten minutes to go the city. The average growth over the past three years in this region is around 70% every year and with the announcement if the IT Park the prices would shoot up consistently every month. This is good opportunity for residential or investment purposes. Hurry up and harvest within the offer ends as we are left with only few plots and also the prices would go up shortly. With the recent developments there is a significant potential for a massive price hike in the near future further beyond our expected and predicted growth.

Our Current Price List ; [ subject to review ]
  • One ground [ 5.5 cents- 2400sq.ft ] – Rs.5,00,000.00
  • Two Grounds [ 11 cents – 4800sq.ft ] - Rs.10,00,000.00
Plus a reasonable fixed rate for sharing the road costs amongst the buyers [ which would be less than the norm in Madurai ].

We will never be beaten for price.

FOR THE ATTENTION OF NRIs;

If you want your land to be looked after by us we would be happy to do so for a charge of Rs10,000 per year in case you are worried about security of the land. We would sign an agreement with you during registration of the land. If you want to sell the land after a year we would be delighted to do it on your behalf.

I am not sure about the purpose of Alumni association website where these kinds of advertisements are posted. This is a shame on doctors who use the site for these kind of purpose.

Message from Dr.K.RAMESH SHANKAR 1984 to 1990 Batch
Hi TvMCians,

It was fantastic to see you all at Northampton on Saturday for our 7th Yearly meet in UK. As u might be aware it was attended by around 45 TvMCians with their families making it around 110 in total numbers. It was a lovely sunny day with Nellai makkal [ what a joy ] I am sure everyone of you would have enjoyed it like me.

It was nice to see Dr.Prathap Gnanamuthu as our Guest. Our spouses and children also did enjoy the day. The programme was well charted and conducted. I am sure we would improve it next year. Games, Presentations and food were nice. It is a shame some batches very not represented and I am sure next year they would make up
for it.

My special thanks goes to the organisers and their spouses namely Dr. Abu, Dr. Bazur, Dr.Hari and Dr.Sriraman who did a great job to make this event a great success. I should not discount the efforts of those TvMCians who made an effort to be there amidst thier tight schedule and made it a grand day. Please pencil the second weekend of May 2009 for our next meet.

Regards,

Dr.K.RAMESH SHANKAR,
1984 - 89 BATCH
